Nominations Announcement of the 12th Asian Film Awards 2018

(January 11, 2018, Hong Kong)

Organized by the Asian Film Awards Academy (“AFA Academy”), the Asian Film Awards (“AFA”) will celebrate its 12th anniversary this year. For this edition, 89 nominations have been made for 17 awards, including the newly added Best New Director and Best Action Film. The nominations represent 32 films from 10 countries. World-renowned Hong Kong director Mr. CHING Siu-tung (程小東) will serve as this year’s Jury President and lead a jury comprising 9 respected film industry professionals, festival programmers and critics from all over the world. Ms. Carina LAU (劉嘉玲) will join the jury as a Celebrity Juror. Student Ambassadors Ms. Cherry NGAN Cheuk-ling (顏卓靈) and Korean actor Mr. LEE Jung-jin (李廷鎮) appeared in the press conference and announced the nomination list.

The 12th Asian Film Awards will take place at one of the world’s leading integrated resorts and must-see destinations, The Venetian Macao, on March 17, 2018 (Saturday) and will present the Excellence in Asian Cinema Award to versatile actress Kara WAI Ying-hung (惠英紅) at the presenting ceremony to highlight her distinguished talents and affirm the achievements and contributions in Asian cinema.

Dr. Wilfred WONG Ying-wai, (王英偉) GBS, JP, Chairman of the AFA Academy and the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society said, " This year, we will celebrate the excellence of MARTIAL ARTS in Asian cinema, by recognizing many outstanding Asian filmmakers and providing a platform for new faces and up-and-coming artists. In addition to the annual AFA, the Academy has further developed various professional programs such as masterclasses, film festival visits for students, young film professionals overseas training programs and film roadshows around the globe. Through these efforts we hope to strengthen the ties between film talents, audiences and the region’s industries.” 

This year, AFA received submissions from 26 countries. The entries were wide-ranging and include period epics, actions, romantic comedies, crime stories, thrillers, monster movies and festival acclaimed works among many others. (Appendix I for the nominations list) 

To expose the nominated films more to the public, AFA is proud to collaborate with Emperor Cinemas this year, over 10 nominated films will be screened at Emperor Cinemas from mid-March 
2018. The first Emperor Cinemas in Hong Kong was unveiled at Entertainment Building, Central featuring iconic design, innovative ticketing, superior service and exceptional gourmet culinary experiences.

Ms. Helen MA (馬梓詠), the renowned beauty queen and co-founder of the online magazine Helen Ma Loves Muse, together with her partners Mr. Enrique Cherubini, will be the Fashion Police at the red carpet for the first time to chit-chat with our glamorous guests about fashion. They founded production company The S3, which bridges the fashion and beauty industry between Europe and Asia.

Inaugurated in 2007, the Asian Film Awards celebrates excellence in Asian cinema through the annual presentation of awards to talents and films that make up the dynamic film industries of Asia. Awards night is a spectacular gathering of stars, celebrities, industry professionals and the media that highlights and publicizes the year’s achievements in Asian movies.

Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA)
In 2013, three main Asian film festivals - Busan, Hong Kong and Tokyo - joined together to create the non-profit organization, the Asian Film Awards Academy to promote and develop Asian cinema and its talents. The AFA Academy highlights, strengthens and develops Asian film industry and culture through the annual Asian Film Awards, and several year-round initiatives including strategies for building regional and international audiences.
