Hong Kong Films Under International Spotlight at Jakarta Film Week

For the first time, Hong Kong short films will be screened overseas, alongside four other feature films under the novel section of 'MADE IN HONG KONG' at Jakarta Film Week.
18 October 2024

Financially supported by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDAHK), the Film Development Fund (FDF), and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Jakarta, the Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA) is collaborating with Jakarta Film Week for the first time to present a novel section “MADE IN HONG KONG”. From October 23 to 25, international audiences gathering in Jakarta will be introduced with Hong Kong’s cinematic creativity.

“MADE IN HONG KONG: FEATURE” will screen four Hong Kong productions, beginning with the action-packed epic “Twilight of the Warrior Walled In” by Soi Cheang. The section also includes “Love Lies”, an unconventional romantic story that begins with an online scam, by Ho Miu Ki, starring Sandra Ng and MC Cheung; “The Remnant”, the directorial debut of Kwan Man Hin, about a former gang member confronting a gangster harassing his neighbours; and “Time Still Turns the Pages” by Nick Cheuk, an emotional drama that has earned New Director awards at the 17th Asian Film Awards. Directors Ho Miu Ki and Nick Cheuk will attend the post-screening Q&A in-person to hear from the audience and share their filmmaking experiences.

For the first time, AFAA is introducing Hong Kong short films at international screening. The “MADE IN HONG KONG: SHORTS COMPILATION” will feature four shorts, including “Overman” and “Mamamoo”, by To Chun Him and Frankie Lee, both winners of the inaugural edition of the International Film Camp; the award-winning short “I Have Arrived” by renowned Hong Kong director Yan Yan Mak, which has been recognised at the Los Angeles Independent Short Film Awards; and “Breathe Without Water” by Christy Tse, which won the Silver Award at the Hong Kong Microfilm Awards. After the screenings, directors To Chun Him, Frankie Lee, and Yan Yan Mak will meet the audience for post-screening Q&A.

In addition to the screenings, Jakarta Film Week will host two insightful film workshops, inviting representatives from Jakarta Film Fund and Indonesian filmmakers to join. Directors Ho Miu Ki and Nick Cheuk will share their filmmaking experience and expertise in editing in the respectively workshops themed “From Script to Screen: Directing Your First Feature Film” and “Combining Two Roles: Challenges and Benefits of Being a Director and Editor in Feature Films”. The workshops offer a unique platform for the two speakers from Hong Kong to communicate directly with local participants, exploring the differences and similarities between Hong Kong and Indonesian filmmaking. This will also foster collaboration and creative exchange between film industries of the two regions.

Another highlight of Jakarta Film Week is the “Hong Kong Film Night” organised by AFAA. This gathering will bring together filmmakers from Hong Kong, Jakarta, and around the world to get together and exchange ideas, providing opportunities for possible collaboration and cultural exchange.
