Guest Speaker

Stanley Kwan is one of Hong Kong’s most internationally acclaimed film directors. He began his career in television before working under key figures of the Hong Kong New Wave, such as Ann Hui and Patrick Tam. His directorial debut Women (1985) was followed by Love Unto Waste (1986), selected for competition at the Locarno Film Festival, and the widely celebrated Rouge (1987), which became a box office success and a critical favourite.

His landmark film Center Stage (1991) earned Maggie Cheung the Best Actress award at the Berlin International Film Festival, where he later won both the Alfred Bauer Prize and the Teddy Award for Hold You Tight (1997).

Kwan is a key figure in Hong Kong’s Second New Wave, known for his sensitive portrayal of identity, memory, and cultural heritage. In recent years, he has continued directing. Meanwhile many of his films have been restored and screened in international retrospectives, gaining new appreciation from younger audiences.

In addition to filmmaking, Kwan has also contributed to nurturing young talent through teaching and mentorship. He continues to support emerging filmmakers, most recently producing Fly Me to the Moon (2023), which received multiple film awards.
