Dazzling Dubai with the Return of the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation!

UAE audiences are in luck – with a selection of eight most captivating and heartfelt Hong Kong films!
2025년03월20일

The Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation is returning to Cinema Akil, the GCC’s only independent arthouse cinema, from March 22 to 28, 2025, bringing an exceptional lineup of Hong Kong’s latest cinematic gems and timeless classics to Dubai.

Presented by the Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA), and in collaboration with Cinema Akil, this year’s festival is set to showcase 8 feature films ranging from powerful dramas, gripping thrillers, to thought-provoking narratives that showcase Hong Kong’s vibrant and diverse film culture.

The 2025 program will kick off with a unique Iftar-style opening night ceremony on March 22, followed by a screening of An Abandoned Team, directed by Thomas LEE and Daniel HO. This drama explores themes of loneliness, redemption, and the unexpected bond between a man and a stray dog, with a post-screening Q&A with director Thomas LEE.

Highlights of the 2025 edition include exclusive Q&A sessions with directors and actors such as actress Sheena CHAN from Blossoms Under Somewhere and director Oliver Siu Kuen CHAN from Montages of a Modern Motherhood.

Experienced film critic Patrick SUEN will also join us to share his insights and delve into behind-the-scenes stories with the guests. These sessions will provide the audience with an opportunity to explore the creative minds behind the films and gain a deeper understanding of the filmmaking process.

“The Academy is delighted to announce its return to Dubai for the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation in 2025. This year, we have selected an exceptional lineup of films that have resonated deeply with audiences, receiving widespread acclaim and emotional response. In collaboration with Cinema Akil, we are excited to offer the local audience a heartfelt experience that helps foster a deeper appreciation for Hong Kong cinema,” said Josie Lin, Executive Director of the Asian Film Awards Academy.

“The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region remains committed to promoting Hong Kong as a key hub for cultural exchange between East and West. Partnering with the AFAA and Cinema Akil for the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation in Dubai allows us to showcase Hong Kong’s unique cultural narrative through film, providing valuable opportunities for filmmakers and local industry professionals to connect and collaborate,” said Damian Lee, Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Dubai.

Cinema Akil—Dubai’s go-to indie theatre for art-house films—will once again set the stage for this cinematic showcase. The venue creates the perfect backdrop for the film screenings and live discussions with Hong Kong’s celebrated filmmakers.

“We are pleased to present the fourth edition of the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation. This year’s festival marks an important milestone in our continued efforts to bring rich and diverse cinematic experiences to the region. Through this festival, we aim not only to engage and inspire our audience but also to support both emerging and established filmmakers in receiving the recognition they truly deserve. The return of the festival underscores the lasting relevance and vitality of Hong Kong cinema, and we look forward to sharing its compelling stories with our devoted community,” said Butheina Kazim, Founder & Managing Director of Cinema Akil.

The Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation is organized by the Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA), in collaboration with Cinema Akil, with financial support from the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDAHK), Film Development Fund (FDF) and Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Dubai.
