Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation in Malaysia to Screen Seven Hong Kong Films "From Idea to Icon" Exhibition Celebrates Craftmanship of Hong Kong Cinema. Four Hong Kong directors and actors are invited to attend the event in Malaysia, including actress Kay Tse from "Out of the Shadow", director Kwan Man Hin and actor Ling Man Lung from “The Remnant” and director Dickson Leung from "YUM Investigation".

Organised by the Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA), financially supported by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDAHK) and the Film Development Fund (FDF), Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation showcases the charm and creativity of Hong Kong cinema to audiences in different Asian regions through touring film screenings various countries. The event also provides a platform for Hong Kong filmmakers to engage with the Asian film industry and foster closer collaborations. Since 2021, the AFAA has toured international cities, including Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta and Phnom Penh.

 

From 20 September to 3 October, Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation and the exhibition “From Idea To Icon: Crafting the Hong Kong Cinema” will be held in Malaysia. The event is financially supported by the CCIDAHK, the FDF and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta, in collaboration with the largest cinema chain in Malaysia, Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), and film distributor GSC Movies (GSCM). During the event, seven Hong Kong films will be screened, with the opening film being Ricky Ko’s “Out of the Shadow”. Other films include Chow Kam Wing’s “For Alice”, Ho Miu Ki’s “Love Lies”, Andy Lo’s “Once in a Blue Moon”, Sunny Lau’s “One Night at School”, Kwan Man Hin’s “The Remnant” and Dickson Leung’s “YUM Investigation”.

Four Hong Kong directors and actors are invited to attend the event in Malaysia, including actress Kay Tse from “Out of the Shadow”, director Kwan Man Hin and actor Ling Man Lung from “The Remnant” and director Dickson Leung from “YUM Investigation”. The opening of the event will take place on 19 September at GSC The Starling Mall, where the opening film “Out of the Shadow” will be screened. Simultaneously, an exhibition titled “From Idea To Icon: Crafting the Hong Kong Cinema” will be kicked off. This exhibition adopts a new concept to present the filmmaking process, unveiling important steps from script creation to post-production and shares with the public how filmmakers invest their heart and soul into making a good film. Featured in the exhibition are: a giant script installation art of “Love Lies”, showcasing Ho Miu Ki’s screenwriting talent; edited action scene clips from “Out of the Shadow”, reflecting the power of film editing; the set and props of a laundromat scene from “The Remnant”, highlighting the charm of production design; and storyboard scripts and special effects comparison clips from “YUM Investigation”, demonstrating the process of imagination realization in post-production. The exhibition will be open for free public viewing from 21 September to 3 October at The Starling Mall.

 

The four talents from Hong Kong will visit Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology for two sharing sessions. In one of the sessions, “Bridging the Gap: from Stage to Screen and Microphone to Film”, will feature actor Ling Man Lung and actress Kay Tse discussing their transitions from music and theatre to film, detailing their motivations and the influence of their past experiences on film performance, providing valuable insights into artistic expression. The other session, “Breaking New Ground: Hong Kong Cinema’s Next Generation”, will introduce emerging directors Kwan Man Hin and Dickson Leung, sharing their unique perspectives on the journey of filmmaking.
