Date: August 2021 – July 2022

Location: Hong Kong

Partners: Broadway Cinematheque

Asian Film Awards Academy has collaborated with Broadway Cinematheque to organize internship programs annually for students with film and media related background since 2017. The program allows students who have a love of films and a keen interest in film programming and curating to gain corresponding work experience. This year, the program started in August 2021 and ended in July 2022, where interns would spend six months in each organization.

Interns are responsible for independently performing a wide range of editorial tasks such as copywriting, proofreading and translating publication of printed material as well as online content. They are involved in providing on-site assistance for Hong Kong Asian Film Festival opening and closing ceremonies, screenings, post-screening talks, and other relevant events. Their duties also include producing video content about the organization’s events and creating engaging digital content for social media platforms. They as well provided clerical and administrative support for the team.

Both interns found the internship experience rewarding and has given them insights into the workings of the film programming industry. “Assisting in the HKAFF has taught me that a film festival runs smoothly through collective effort by everyone in the team, lots of work such as film selection, venue arrangement, logistical preparation and post-event evaluation were involved. The festival wouldn’t have been held successfully without effective teamwork. I gained the knowledge of the planning and execution of a film festival.” They pointed out by involving themselves in different events held by the organizations they met actors and filmmakers and listened to them share their career stories.

“The 15th Asian Film Awards was live streamed on YouTube and I was required to create images and publish the results on the academy’s social media instantly. This is definitely a new and exciting experience, I at the same time learnt to work under pressure.”

“Both organizations gave us autonomy to show our creativity and encouraged us to express opinions. Without this internship experience, we would not have the knowledge or skills we have today. We are confident that we will continue to grow and develop both professionally and personally,” they added.

“This is undoubtedly a rare chance for students to get a grip on the film industry, which doesn’t usually offer open recruitment, and the ways cinema and film festivals operate,” said Didi Wu, the Chief Programmer of Broadway Cinematheque.

Josie Lin, Executive Director of the Asian Film Awards Academy, said: “We would like to nurture a new generation of talents by giving them the opportunity to gain exposure to the film industry. This internship program aims to empower students to pursue excellence in their future. We will continue our efforts to offer students invaluable chances to gain practical work experience, and to foster the development of local film industry.”

This internship program gives students an opportunity to learn thoroughly about the career field they want to pursue, develops their professional soft skills such as communication, organizational and problem-solving, and most importantly, prepares them for the workplace by building a strong resume and professional network.
