The event was financially supported by the CCIDAHK, the FDF, and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta, in collaboration with the largest cinema chain in Malaysia, Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), and film distributor GSC Movies (GSCM). During the event, seven Hong Kong films were screened, with the opening film being Ricky Ko’s “Out of the Shadow”. Other films included Chow Kam Wing’s “For Alice”, Ho Miu Ki’s “Love Lies”, Andy Lo’s “Once in a Blue Moon”, Sunny Lau’s “One Night at School”, Kwan Man Hin’s “The Remnant”, and Dickson Leung’s “YUM Investigation”.
The opening event welcomed numerous distinguished guests, including Encik Ahmad Syazli Muhd Khiar, Deputy Director General of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS); Daniel Chan, Deputy Director of HKETO in Jakarta; YK Tung, COO of GSCM; and Josie Lin, Executive Director of the AFAA. Also in attendance were Ng Kin Hung, producer of “Out of the Shadow,” along with lead actress Kay Tse; director Kwan Man Hin and actor Ling Man Lung of “The Remnant”; and Dickson Leung, director of “YUM Investigation”. The event drew many film enthusiasts and industry professionals. Various mainstream Malaysian media including Sin Chew Daily, Kwong Wah Yit Poh, Guang Ming Daily, and other outlets reported on the opening ceremony and interviewed the guests.
Director Ricky Ko’s “Out of the Shadow” was the opening film for this programme in Malaysia. Kay Tse, the lead actress of “Out of the Shadow,” briefly addressed the audience and introduced the programme. She shared her journey of transitioning from a singer to an actress and spoke about her experience portraying a mother alongside emerging actress Larine Tang.
Director Kwan also shared the story behind creating “The Remnant,” while actor Ling Man Lung, who played the villain in the film, shared his thoughts on portraying the character: “The process of honing my acting skills was also a process of developing empathy, helping me understand the world better.”
Director Dickson Leung from “YUM Investigation” received a warm reception from the local audience with a full-house screening. Visiting Malaysia for the first time, Dickson shared his impressions of the exchange and expressed his desire to film a supernatural or horror movie there in the future.
The four talents from Hong Kong visited Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology for two sharing sessions. One of the sessions, “Bridging the Gap: from Stage to Screen and Microphone to Film,” featured actor Ling Man Lung and actress Kay Tse discussing their transitions from music and theatre to film, detailing their motivations and the influence of their past experiences on film performance, providing valuable insights into artistic expression.
The other session, “Breaking New Ground: Hong Kong Cinema’s Next Generation,” introduced emerging directors Kwan Man Hin and Dickson Leung, who shared their unique perspectives on the journey of filmmaking. They also discussed the difficulties they faced as new directors and their journeys in making their first films. Dickson advised students to keep faith and persevere: “Outstanding works will eventually be discovered; it’s just a matter of time.”
In addition, Hong Kong film talents also visited Malaysian radio and television stations. They participated in the recording of the TV programme “8 E-News” and were interviewed by well-known radio stations such as MELODY and MY FM. During these occasions, the team shared their film insights and creative inspirations with Malaysian audiences, delving deep into the production process and creative concepts of Hong Kong films. They also elaborated on their views on the development of the Hong Kong film industry and potential collaboration opportunities with the Malaysian counterpart. These interviews not only deepened Malaysian audiences’ understanding of Hong Kong films but also built a bridge for exchange between the film industries of both regions.
An exhibition titled “From Idea To Icon: Crafting the Hong Kong Cinema” was also launched. This exhibition adopted a new concept to present the filmmaking process, unveiling important steps from script creation to post-production and shared with the public how filmmakers invested their heart and soul into making a good film. Featured in the exhibition were: a giant script installation art of “Love Lies,” showcasing Ho Miu Ki’s screenwriting talent; edited action scene clips from “Out of the Shadow,” reflecting the power of film editing; the set and props of a laundromat scene from “The Remnant,” highlighting the charm of production design; and storyboard scripts and special effects comparison clips from “YUM Investigation,” demonstrating the process of imagination realization in post-production.
