Screening nine outstanding Asian works with three post-screening sharing sessions with talents from different Asian regions.Organised by the Asian Film Awards Academy, in collaboration with Broadway Cinematheque, “Asian Cinerama 2024: Eternal Youth” will take place from September 14 to 22 at the Broadway Cinematheque and Premiere Elements. This new edition of Asian Cinerama focuses on the theme of “Youth”, featuring nine films from across Asia from 2001 to 2024, showcasing various directors’ perspectives on youth. The event will invite key film talents including producer Tanaka Sachihiko and lead actress Karata Erika from “When Morning Comes, I Feel Empty”, director Lien Chien-Hung and lead actress Esther Liu from “Salli”, as well as lead actor Jack Tan from “GOLD” to meet fans in Hong Kong.
Asian Cinerama aims to promote and celebrate outstanding Asian films, giving local audiences the chance to appreciate the non-mainstream Asian cinema. The selection includes films that introduce novel topics and unique perspectives, showcasing quality Asian films to Hong Kong cinephiles.
The nine selected films include “14 Again: I Love You Two Thousand”, a Thai comedy directed by Nareubadee Wetchakam that blends road trip, romance, friendship, and horror. The line-up also features the 4K restored version of “My Girl”, the 2003 Thai box office champion directed by Songyos Sugmakanan. Additionally, there is “When Morning Comes, I Feel Empty”, starring Karata Erika and directed by Ishibashi Yuho. Another highlight is “Doubles Match” directed by Hung Po-Hao, which stars Taiwanese actors Rexen Cheng and Shih Ming-Shuai, and was the opening film of this year’s Taipei Film Festival.
“Salli”, directed by Lien Chien-Hung, has garnered six nominations at this year’s Taipei Film Awards, including Best Narrative Feature and Best Actress, and has been selected for festivals like Busan International Film Festival and Osaka Asian Film Festival. “Heavy Snow” directed by Yun Su-ik, marks the silver screen debut of Korean star Han So-hee, who challenges herself in an independent film as a lesbian character. The restored version of “Take Care of My Cat” directed by Jeong Jae-eun, was recognised by The Guardian as one of “the 20 most important contemporary Korean films” and earned the first Best Actress honour in film for Bae Doona. There is also “GOLD”, directed by Adrian Teh, a Malaysian film starring talented actor Jack Tan, based on the true story of Malaysia’s Paralympic badminton champion. Lastly, “Brief History of a Family,” directed by Lin Jianjie, was screened at international festivals like Sundance and Berlin, and has been praised by foreign audiences as the Chinese version of “Saltburn.”
In addition to the theme of “Youth”, six among the featured films focus on female characters and perspectives. The programme will also premiere the 4K restored version of “My Girl” and the restored version of “Take Care of My Cat”, along with five new films making their Hong Kong premieres, giving local fans an exclusive preview.
Karata Erika, who was nominated for Best Newcomer at the 13th Asian Film Awards for “Asako I & II”, returns to the big screen after five years to introduce her latest work “When Morning Comes, I Feel Empty”; while Malaysian actor Jack Tan, nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 17th Asian Film Awards, will also meet Hong Kong fans again with his latest film “GOLD”.
