White Light Post
October 2023 – December 2023Date: October 2023 – December 2023
Location: Bangkok
Partners: White Light Post
With support from CreateHK and the Film Development Fund, the Asian Film Awards Academy has once again collaborated with Thai post-production company White Light Post to launch a 3-month training program with two placements at their Bangkok headquarters. The programmeaims to provide overseas training and internship opportunities, allowing young Hong Kong film practitioners to join well-established production institutions, learn from local professionals, exchange insights, and deepen their industry knowledge.
The two participants interned at White Light Post from October to December 2023, rotating through different departments. They gained hands-on experience in organizing footage, assisting colorists, and coordinating between departments. They also learned to use professional color grading software and equipment in the color suite, assisting colorists in adjusting various parameters to streamline the color grading process. Both gained a deeper understanding of the post-production workflow and color grading procedures and were inspired by the distinct color grading style of White Light Post from the typical approach in Hong Kong’s major film productions. The Thai company “pursues a more natural look, aiming to make subtle adjustments without significantly affecting the inherent quality and colors of the image.”
The participants also enjoyed the Thai company’s collaborative work culture, with flexible hours and team-bonding activities. “Colleagues are passionate about their work, even willing to work overtime, and they would cook dinner together during late-night sessions, like a big family.”During this internship, they were able to work on diverse projects, including Netflix series, which was a rare opportunity in Hong Kong, “Netflix engineers even came to Thailand to teach the local staff how to use the color grading software, which was eye-opening.” After the internship, the participants felt they had a clearer understanding of post-production and identified specific career goals. One of them expressed the desire to “further studying in color grading, as I greatly enjoyed the process and found myself more interested in mid and late-stage production.”
