Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation Makes Historical Debut in Cambodia

The teams of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, Out of the Shadow, and As It Burns attended the opening ceremony of the first-ever Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation in Cambodia. The Phnom Penh audience reacted enthusiastically, and the exhibition's meticulous recreation of the film scenes was a delightful surprise for everyone involved.

The first ever Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation in Cambodia commenced with a grand opening ceremony, marking a memorable moment for both the Hong Kong and Cambodian film industries. The event is graced by the presence of honourable guests, renowned Hong Kong filmmakers, local celebrities and distinguished guests from both regions.

Held at Factory Phnom Penh, the opening ceremony was a dazzling affair that showcased the vibrant and diverse cinematic culture of Hong Kong. Presented by the Asian Film Awards Academy, financially supported by Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA), Film Development Fund and Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, and in collaboration with Westec Media Limited, the programme showcases seven Hong Kong films at Fable Cinema, Factory Phnom Penh from 3 to 7 July 2024.

 

Among the honourable guests were Her Excellency Pen Moni Makara, Secretary of State, Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts Cambodia, Mr. Lin Ruihua, Counsellor, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Kingdom of Cambodia, Mr. Pok Borak, Director of Cinema Department, Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts Cambodia, Mr. Parson Lam, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Bangkok, Ms. Josie Lin, Executive Director of Asian Film Awards Academy, Mr. Michael Chai, CEO of Westec Media Limited, Mr. John Chong, veteran Hong Kong film producer and Mr. Angus Chan and Mr. Jozev Kiu, executive producer and actor of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Also present were Mr. Ricky Ko and Ms. Larine Tang, director and lead actress of the film Out of Shadow and Ms. Kinnie Cheung, producer of As It Burns.

Attendees were treated to a spectacular and unique exhibition that showcases Hong Kong’s diverse cityscapes, recreating the most memorable scenes that appeared in the six recent Hong Kong films, as well as iconic sights in Hong Kong. The Dynamic Cityscapes of Hong Kong Films Exhibition is welcoming visits from from 4 July until 4 August 2024, 10am – 7pm daily at Factory Phnom Penh. The admission is free and exhibition content are available in English and Khmer.

The team of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In were impressed by the rapid development of Phnom Penh and the warmth of its people. During the post-screening discussion, the audience’s enthusiastic and thoughtful questions highlighted their deep engagement with the film. Producer Angus Chan praised the Hong Kong film scene exhibition organized by AFAA, which featured vintage televisions and nostalgic installations. “They showcased not only scenes from Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, but also elements from other films like the neon signs from A Light Never Goes Out, the classroom from Time Still Turns the Pages, and the vault from The Goldfinger. A lot of thoughts and efforts went into it,” he remarked. Kinnie Cheung, producer of As It Burns, expressed her excitement about the film being screened in Cambodia and enjoyed engaging deeply with the audience afterward.

Director Ricky Ko of Out of the Shadows had a very positive first impression of Phnom Penh, while actress Larine Tang was excited to feel the great fondness for Hong Kong cinema among local people. This invigorated her and fueled her desire to create more great work. She also congratulated Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In on its success. “Recently, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In has been creating a buzz across Asia, bringing pride to Hong Kong. I am proud to be a member of the Hong Kong film industry, and that investors and producers will be more confident in Hong Kong cinema,” she said.
