The 17th Asian Film Awards press conference was held successfully on January 12, 2024. In addition to the announcement of the Jury President, the nominations for all 16 awards categories, and details of the ceremony, the theme and key visual of this year’s awards was also revealed. Upholding the theme “Together We Tell Story”, the 17th AFA hopes to gather filmmakers from across Asia with various backgrounds to tell different stories through films.

In collaboration with Hong Kong local design studio STUDIOWMW, a crystal trophy is used as the main imagery. The traditional metallic trophy was transformed into crystal-like. The clarity and translucence characteristics and texture of crystal, enables refraction of light passing through that creates a spectrum of colours. This symbolises the versatility of films as well as the diversity and inclusivity of the AFA emphasised in the theme – acknowledging films of different genres, from different regions and by different filmmakers. Moreover, floating crystal pieces represent the different participating filmmakers and films from all over Asia, which assembles to create the intact Asian Film Awards trophy. This echoes with one of the keys in our theme – “cohesion”. Large and modern type font is adopted to add a refreshing energetic touch to the Asian Film Awards.

On the animated visual design, interchanging of fonts demonstrates the diversity of the film industry. The crystal trophy bathing in shadow and light is gradually rotating, creating a spectrum of colours, symbolises the uniqueness of filmmakers and films is exhibited through the platform of AFA. In addition, it expresses that the success of each film is contributed by the concerted efforts of all participants in the filmmaking process.
