The event welcomed numerous distinguished guests, including Encik Ahmad Syazli Muhd Khiar, Deputy Director General of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS); Daniel Chan, Deputy Director of HKETO in Jakarta; YK Tung, COO of GSCM; and Josie Lin, Executive Director of the AFAA. Also in attendance were Ng Kin Hung, producer of “Out of the Shadow,” along with lead actress Kay Tse; director Kwan Man Hin and actor Ling Man Lung of “The Remnant”; and Dickson Leung, director of “YUM Investigation”. The event drew many film enthusiasts and industry professionals, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with excitement and support.

At the event, Daniel Chan, Deputy Director of the HKETO in Jakarta, introduced Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation and the “From Idea to Icon: Crafting Hong Kong Cinema” exhibition to all attendees. He explained that through screening Hong Kong films and organising related exhibitions in various Asian countries and regions, the programme aims to showcase the charm and creativity of Hong Kong cinema to audiences across the region. It is dedicated to providing a platform for Hong Kong filmmakers to engage with the Asian film industry, fostering closer collaborative relationships.

Director Ricky Ko’s “Out of the Shadow” is the opening film for this programme in Malaysia. A sold-out audience of over 300 people packing the venue of this premiere to capacity.Prior to the film screening, Josie Lin, Executive Director of the Asian Film Awards Academy, and Kay Tse, the lead actress of “Out of the Shadow”, briefly addressed the audience and introduced the programme. Kay Tse plays the lead role in the film, a former undercover agent who has been living in seclusion in Shek O and returns to action after twenty years to protect her daughter. She stars alongside new generation actress Larine Tang as mother and daughter, not only teaming up to fight crime for justice and delivering a series of exciting action scenes but also portraying a mother-daughter relationship that brings both laughter and tears, deeply moving the audience.

Various mainstream Malaysian media including Sin Chew Daily, Kwong Wah Yit Poh, Guang Ming Daily, and other outlets came to report on the opening ceremony and interview the guests. Visiting Kuala Lumpur for the first time, Ling Man Lung brought his work “The Remnant” to meet with the audience in Malaysia. When introducing his role, he said with a smile, “I’ve never played a villain on the big screen before. Perhaps the director sensed that I had some wicked thoughts and felt I could bring them out in the character. As for whether I performed well or not, I’ll have to rely on you, the audience, to tell me.”

Directors Kwan Man Hin and Dickson Leung are visiting Malaysia for the first time. Both of them hope to promote collaboration between Malaysian and Hong Kong filmmakers on various levels through this “Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation” event. When asked if they are interested in shooting in, Dickson Leung candidly said, “Malaysia has a great sense of space, and the places are vast. The people here are also passionate, and we can feel everyone’s enthusiasm for films. We would really like to try collaborating with the teams here.”

From 20 September to 3 October, the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation and the exhibition “From Idea to Icon: Crafting Hong Kong Cinema” are being held in GSC The Starling Mall, Malaysia. Seven Hong Kong films will be screened, with the opening film being Ricky Ko’s “Out of the Shadow”.
