Celebrating Hong Kong Cinema: “Made in Hong Kong” Sparkled at Jakarta Film Week
First time screening Hong Kong short films overseas, bringing Hong Kong and Indonesian filmmakers and audiences together through screenings and interactive workshops.Financially supported by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDAHK), the Film Development Fund (FDF), and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Jakarta, the Asian Film Awards Academy collaborated with Jakarta Film Week for the first time to present the “MADE IN HONG KONG” section during the festival from 23 to 25 October, promoting Hong Kong cinema on the international stage.
During Jakarta Film Week 2024, the Asian Film Awards Academy hosted the “Hong Kong Night”. Distinguished guests attended this gathering, including Libera Cheng Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta; Rina Damayanti, Festival Director of Jakarta Film Week; Marlina Y Machfud, representative of Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia; Alexander Matius, Chief Business Development Officer of MD Pictures, one of Indonesia’s largest film production companies, prominent local directors Wregas Bhanuteja of Rekata Studios and Jason Iskandar, as well as actor Festival Ambassador Kristo Immanuel. This event brought together filmmakers from Hong Kong, Indonesia, and around the world to share creative insights and experiences, strengthening connections between the film communities among regions.
The “MADE IN HONG KONG: FEATURE” section presented four Hong Kong feature films, including Soi Cheang’s action epic “Twilight of the Warrior: Walled In”; Ho Miu Ki’s romantic comedy “Love Lies”, which explores themes of love and online scams; Kwan Man Hin’s directorial debut “The Remnant”; and Nick Cheuk’s heartfelt film “Time Still Turns the Pages”, which earned him the Best New Director award at the 17th Asian Film Awards.
Director Ho Miu Ki and Nick Cheuk attended the post-screening Q&A sessions, where they shared their inspirations and listened to feedback from the Indonesian audience. Ho Miu Ki, director of “Love Lies”, expressed the similarities between the scam and filmmaking: “The team works hard behind the scenes to create something; the story may be fictional, but the emotions it evokes are real. Just like love in the film—if you believe in it, then it is real.” Nick Cheuk, director of “Time Still Turns the Pages”, recalled, “At first, I worried that the heavy themes might affect the child actors’ emotional development, but I later found that they actually detached from their roles more easily than adult actors. They would step out of character as soon as the camera stopped rolling.” He also shared his experiences of tailoring directing approaches to match the personalities of different child actors.
Moreover, the Asian Film Awards Academy introduced the overseas screening of Hong Kong short films for the first time in the festival. The “MADE IN HONG KONG: SHORTS COMPILATION” section featured four selected works: “Overman” and “Mamamoo” by To Chun Him and Frankie Lee, both winners of the inaugural International Film Camp; “I Have Arrived”, by renowned Hong Kong director Yan Yan Mak, recognised at the Los Angeles Independent Shorts Awards; and “Breathe Without Water” by Christy Tse, which won the Silver Award at the Hong Kong Microfilm Awards.
Directors Yan Yan Mak, Frankie Lee and To Chun Him attended the post-screening Q&A, interacting with the audience. The local audience shared that the four films brought them diverse and refreshing perspectives, unlike the productions they usually see in local cinemas. Yan Yan Mak explained that “I Have Arrived” was a commissioned work on mindful parenting, she has incorporated Zen teachings to tell a moving story about family love. Frankie Lee, director of “Mamamoo”, shared that each of his productions reflects different phases of his life. When he created “Mamamoo”, he was experiencing intense negative emotions and felt the urge to tear everything down and start over, which is the inspiration for him to create the film. To Chun Him’s “Overman” is a rare short that blends live-action and animation, reflecting his childhood dreams of becoming a superhero and the uncertainty and confusion of growing up, with the rough superhero mask symbolising the gap between dreams and reality.
In addition to the exciting film screenings, two filmmaking workshops were held, welcoming representatives from the Jakarta Film Fund and numerous local filmmakers. Directors Ho Miu Ki and Nick Cheuk shared insights from their careers and discussed the unique aspects of filmmaking. These workshops encouraged creative exchanges and sparked ideas for future projects, fostering collaboration.
Together with promising Indonesian writer-director Sabrina Rochelle, Ho Miu Ki shared her experience transitioning from a screenwriter to a director in the workshop titled “From Script to Screen: Directing Your First Feature Film”. She highlighted that her first feature “Love Lies” came to life thanks to the strong support of producer Chan Hing Kai and funding from the First Feature Film Initiative. As a new director, she worked closely with the cinematographers, production design team, and different professional departments to create the best visual representation of the story. She emphasised, “A director must be clear about their own vision, and trust the experts, but at the same time understand when to compromise and when to stand firm.”
Director Nick Cheuk also shared his experience in a workshop titled “Challenges and Benefits of Being a Director and Editor in Feature Films”, alongside Indonesian award-winner editors Arturo GP and Kelvin Nugroho. He believes that taking on multiple roles as a director, screenwriter, and editor allowed him to maintain consistency throughout the filmmaking process, from script development to the final product. He expressed, “I tried out every film role I was interested in, which has been invaluable for my growth as a director.”
